Cordillera Administrative Region- The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has reminded the public to constantly observe gender equality and children’s rights as this year’s observance of the National Family Month celebration carries the theme “Gender Equality and Children’s Rights in Contemporary Families”.

DSWD Regional Director Janet P. Armas said that this year’s observance recognizes the challenges that are currently faced by Filipino families.

“The struggle for gender equality and observance of children’s rights has long been prevalent in our country, and also here in the Cordilleras. But with modernization at hand, the struggle becomes even more challenging. Every sector of the society and not just the Government, should pursue this. As the family serves as its basic foundation, we encourage that these [gender equality and children’s rights] be taught within the families”, Director Armas shared.

As part of this year’s celebration, a forum on adoption, foster care and solo parent’s act will be conducted by the DSWD on 23 September 2015 at the DSWD-CAR Training Center.

“As our target participants are identified solo parents and prospective foster parents as identified in partnership with the Baguio City Social Welfare and Development Office, the forum aims not just to increase the knowledge of interested public in foster care and Solo Parent’s Act, but we want them to take part in achieving social equality between men and women and to ensure that children’s roles and rights are being acknowledged starting in their own families”, Social Welfare Officer Mary Ann Buclao shared.

The said forum will focus on discussions tackling foster family care and solo parent’s guidelines including as to who should be a qualified foster parent to a child. This is to minimize cases of abused children in the hands of their foster parents.  Roles and rights of Filipino children will also be re-iterated.

The forum will also provide discussions on the Solo Parent’s Act which may give help and protection to solo parents by enhancing their knowledge and awareness of their rights as solo parents.

In partnership with the Local Social Welfare and Development Offices, local government units and other government agencies, the National Family Month is being celebrated every September. #DSWD-CAR, SOCIAL MARKETING UNIT, Nerizza Faye G. Villanueva with Florida Domogdog (UB Intern)
