Beneficiaries and barangay officials in Abra take turn to maintain the nursery every weekends and watering the plants every day built through the 2022 Risk Resiliency Program for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation for Disaster Risk Reduction Program (RRP-CCAM-DRR) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office CAR (DSWD Field Office CAR).
The project seeks to improve the resiliency of communities along Abra river through seedling production to susceptible flood prone areas.
Aside from the town of Danglas, the project was also implemented in the towns of Bucloc, Daguioman, Lacub, Lagangilang, Langiden, Licuan-Baay, Luba, Sallapadan, Tayum, Tineg, and Tubo with a total of 209,500 seedlings produced, 2,340 beneficiaries in the Abra served and PHP 7,123,000 cost of assistance provided by the agency for the Cash for Work project and PHP 600,000 counterpart of the Provincial LGU of Abra.
According to Danglas Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer Helen Grace Aganad the nursery will be maintained to ensure enough source of seedlings during tree planting activities; provide additional income for the barangay of which they can sell the seedlings; serve as source of seedlings for the barangay orchard; and serve as immersion venue for TVL students of Western Abra National High School.
For the Barangay LGU and beneficiaries, the cash assistance received from the DSWD is used to buy daily necessities while the knowledge acquired from the Provincial Environment and Natural Resource Office and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office during the orientation and implementation of the project is continuously used for the progress of the barangay.
As water supply remain as one of the challenges in the implementation, every beneficiary or barangay LGU in duty is assigned to fetch water to water the plants.
“Masaya pala magnursery, imaintain natin dahil para sa atin din naman ‘to, para sa next generations lalo na at fruit bearing trees itong mga seedlings natin,” says Nagaparan Barangay Captain Quirino B.
