In a world where challenges often seem insurmountable, a simple act of kindness can be the catalyst for a remarkable turnaround. For Arlene Allejo, a solo parent, the financial assistance she received from Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) Program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development Field Office (DSWD FO CAR) gave her that ray of sunshine, bringing warmth and hope to her and her seven children.

Arlene’s life was once marred by the shadows of domestic abuse. Her ex-husband’s cruelty left her physically and emotionally scarred, but she refused to be defined by her past. With seven young children to care for, she found the strength to break free from the toxic cycle and start anew.

As a solo parent, she faced daunting challenges. Financial struggles, social isolation, and the weight of single-handedly raising her children seemed impossible to handle. “Kasla napukawak, kasla awanen ti pag-asa kon. Ngem, anya ngay, kailangan ko agbiag adda ti annakko nga umas-asa kaniyak” (I felt lost and hopeless. But I knew I had to live and keep going for my kids), she recalled.

When Arlene received the financial assistance of AICS Program, for her, it wasn’t just a handout, it was more than a monetary aid – despite the odds stacked against her, it was a light of hope and confidence in her strength and determination to build a better life for her family.

As she recounted her journey, her eyes began to light up with gratitude and said,  “Talaga nga narigat maging solo parent. Kapus kami ti inaldaw. Ngem, nagsiyaat ta adda ti DSWD nga sumuporta, dakkel nga tulong daytoy naawat ko para ti kasapulan mi” (It’s really tough being a solo parent. We’re struggling to make ends meet every day. But, thankfully, there’s DSWD’s support. This assistance I received is a big help for our needs).

DSWD’s AICS Program support has enabled Arlene to alleviate financial struggle and focus on building a better future for her family. From providing food on the table to ensuring her children receive education and healthcare, the program’s financial assistance has given her the spirit to keep pushing forward.

Today, Arlene is rewriting her story, one small victory at a time. “Kayak daytoy, ken ammok nga haanak nga agmay-maysa, adda dagiti annakku, adda kayo, addaak pay nga agbiag” (I can do this, and I know I’m not alone, I have my children, I have you all, and I’m still here, alive) she said with her firm voice.

In Arlene’s view, AICS Program brought her the hope and relief she needed most. This program of DSWD is the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens, particularly the most vulnerable members of society. Through its efforts, families like Arlene’s are given a chance to thrive, and their stories serve as an inspiration for others who may be facing similar challenges. As the government continues to roll out similar initiatives, this reminds them that they are not alone, and that help is always within reach.

Arlene’s journey is one of courage, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her children, a powerful call that with the right support, anyone can overcome adversity and create a brighter future for themselves and their loved ones.

As Arlene looks to the future, she is filled with renewed hope and purpose. She’s building a new life with new dreams. She’s proving to herself and her children that they are worthy of love, care, and happiness. And she’s showing others that no matter what they’ve faced, they too can rise above, and become the victor of their own story.# DSWD FIELD OFFICE CAR, SOCIAL MARKETING UNIT, MAYROSE U. CARIÑO
